About
Ataur Rahman Babul, a retired government officer from Nilkamal union (Dularhat police station), Char Fasson upazila, Bhola, produces vermicompost commercially as an alternative to chemical fertiliser. In 2019 he trained under a project of the Family Development Association (FDA) and started with two troughs, buying worms from another entrepreneur named Salma and dung from local cattle farmers, at a cost of Tk 4,000. With a Tk 1 lakh loan he then built 16 concrete tanks of 5 by 5 feet, a dung shed and 200 rings, feeding the worms banana stems and straw. The 16 tanks, 200 rings and 25 troughs now produce 35 maunds of compost a month, which he sells at Tk 25 a kg, or Tk 1,000 a maund. One worker, paid Tk 15,000 a month, collects dung and makes the compost. After all costs he clears about Tk 15,000 a month.
