About
Manjur Hossain, an educated young man from the College Para area of West Char Umed union in Lalmohan upazila, makes earthworm (organic) compost on his own farm. Two years before the report he trained at the upazila agriculture office and set up a vermicompost farm with just Tk 1,000. Using ring, 'current' and house methods, he turns earthworms, cow dung, water hyacinth, banana plants, straw and vegetable waste into compost in 25 to 30 days. He sells online and offline, sending orders to Cumilla, Jashore, Dhaka, Patuakhali and other districts. The report says he earns about Tk 30,000 a month and now owns assets worth Tk 5 lakh. Following his example, about 50 local farmers have started making vermicompost.
