About
Atiar Rahman (53), of Daulatdihi village in Jashore Sadar upazila, has bought and sold vegetables at the Barinagar wholesale vegetable market for 40 years. From the age of ten he worked at the market alongside his father, day labourer Mohir Uddin Biswas, hauling water, sewing sacks and sorting vegetables; later he began buying small amounts himself and sending them to wholesalers in other districts. Once unable to read, he learned at a night school and now keeps the business accounts. At the market he buys vegetables from farmers at wholesale rates; his workers sort, wash, bag and sew them up, and his own two trucks carry them to wholesalers in Dhaka's Jatrabari and Karwan Bazar and elsewhere. He trades Tk 2-3 lakh worth of vegetables a day and employs at least 20 workers. His elder son Rabiul Islam, who has a master's degree, and younger son Roknuzzaman now help run the business, making three generations at the same market.
