About
Making reed flutes is the main trade of Bachchu Mondol and his wife Nasima of Debipur village, Tilakpur union, Naogaon Sadar; for 28 years all six members of the family have made flutes. Debipur is known as the 'village of flutes'; the craft began about 50 years ago with Alek Mondol and now involves some 300 families. Reeds are cut and dried, and each flute passes through at least 15 steps, with a sheath, tube and reed piece, before tinsel and a balloon are added and they are packed a hundred to a bag. Ahead of the 2025 Boishakh fairs the couple had already sold 30,000 flutes and had orders for about 20,000 more. Debipur flutes are bought by wholesalers and fair hawkers from Rangpur, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Khulna, Sylhet and other districts, often sent by courier.
