About

Shamim Sikder runs a cattle farm in Borobashail village, Rajihar union, Agailjhara, Barishal. Through his father's cattle trade he has raised cattle since childhood, and in 2012 he started the farm with 20 local cows. In 2022 the farm had 97 cattle, including two cows that each gave 18–22 kg of milk a day. Its Australian Holstein Friesian bull 'Barishaler Boss' was bought as a one-year-old calf from Shahapur, Khulna, three years earlier; it weighed about 55 maunds (2,200 kg), stood six and a half feet tall and was ten and a half feet long. The farmer says it was raised on bran, molasses, oil cake, gram, broken-rice porridge, grass and jackfruit, without drugs or artificial methods, at a feed cost of Tk 800–900 a day. Before Eid-ul-Azha 2022 its asking price was Tk 35 lakh, and Shamim wanted to sell it from the farm rather than at a market. Crowds came to the farm every day to see the bull.
