Altapol in Keshabpur upazila, Jashore, is known as a 'cottage industry village': in some 400 home workshops across Altapol and neighbouring villages, mahogany wood is turned into about 30 kinds of goods such as flower vases, candle stands, bangle stands, pitchers, bowls, ashtrays and sindoor boxes. One such workshop is 'Bhai Bhai Kutir Shilpa' at Altapol Teish Mile bazar. Its manager Rony Biswas says 30 workers work there and are paid by the piece. In this craft the mahogany is cut to size, debarked and sun-dried, then fixed on an electric motor-driven lathe, carved with chisels, smoothed with sandpaper and coloured and polished. Demand peaks during fairs; the goods go to Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi division and every district of the country.
