About
Golzar Hossain of Dohila village in Shibganj municipality, Bogura, runs Bismillah Plastic House. After years of hardship raising four children, and encouraged by others, he started a small old-plastic business in 2011 near Bihar Road in Dohila with a loan of Tk 10,000. He buys used plastic from village hawkers at Tk 20–30 a kg depending on grade, sorts it, cuts it by machine, washes it well and grinds it into flakes, which are packed in sacks. Each sack holds 20–30 kg and sells for Tk 600–800 to traders in Bogura and Dhaka. By his account every Tk 1 lakh of plastic sold leaves a profit of Tk 15,000–20,000 after costs, and his business now turns over lakhs of taka. His youngest son Zilhajj helps him. According to the report about ten such units have grown up around waste plastic in Shibganj; a Department of Environment official said traders like him reduce pollution by collecting scattered plastic.
