Cumilla Batik Centre is a batik workshop in the Kamalpur area of Cumilla. Its mahajan (owner) Rashedul Islam says his father started the workshop 35 years ago and he has run it for the last five years. Batik in Kamalpur began about 50 years ago with two brothers, Lal Mia and Mohan Mia; today about 25 workshops in Kamalpur and nearby make batik saris, three-pieces, shirts, lungis and bedsheets. De-starching, dyeing, wax blocking, brush work by women and sun-drying are all done by hand. Rashedul says the business depends on the weather: without sun work stops, demand falls in winter, and paying workers then is hard. He believes low-interest or interest-free loans would help the craft grow.
