About
Dalim Azad of Ujalpur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila went to Malaysia in 2007 and, on returning in 2018, began growing local fruit on his own land, without making a profit. He then turned his four bighas into a mixed orchard of foreign fruit: from Manirampur in Jashore he bought 300 Darjeeling orange, 300 BARI-1 malta and 9 grape saplings at Tk 140 each; 140 seedless lemon saplings from Narsingdi at Tk 75 each; and 600 guava saplings from the Baradi Horticulture Centre in Meherpur. The saplings alone cost Tk 1.05 lakh, with about Tk 2 lakh more for cultivation until the trees fruited in the second year. He broke off the first year's flowers to strengthen the trees; in 2021 he earned Tk 1.5 lakh from guava, lemons and a little malta, and in 2022 he hoped to sell at least Tk 5 lakh worth of fruit. He has to deal with insect attacks and heat; he plans to raise grafted saplings to sell to other farmers.
