Didar Hossain of Katiadi Upazila, Kishoreganj, has been in the jute trade for 25 years. Katiadi is the district's biggest jute market; running since British times, it handles jute from Bhairab, Pakundia, Hossainpur, Bajitpur, Karimganj and Shibpur in Narsingdi, and its buyers are mill owners from Narayanganj and Narsingdi. Traders here buy in season, store the jute in godowns and sell late in the season. In 2023, with prices falling, Didar Hossain had to sell the previous year's stock, bought at Tk 3,000 a maund, for under Tk 2,000 and lost about a lakh of his capital. At that time bot jute was selling at Tk 1,400-1,600 and bogi jute at Tk 1,800-2,200 a maund at the market.
