Shamim Mia and his wife Shirin Begum run a cattle-fattening farm in Shahadubi village, Shibrampur union, Birganj upazila, about 58 km from Dinajpur town. In mid-2008 Shamim went to Dhaka to pull a rickshaw; when he came home about a year later his father gave him a calf. He sold it five months later for Tk 12,000 and bought two calves, and the herd has grown ever since. A 115 ft by 12 ft tin-roofed cowshed adjoins the house; husband and wife both work on the farm — Shamim bathes the cattle and Shirin chops straw by machine. Before Eid-ul-Azha 2023 the farm had 30 cattle; after selling one or two a day in the Eid market, 19 remained, each priced at Tk 80,000–1.5 lakh. In 2022 the Department of Livestock Services named him the best farmer in Rangpur division. With the farm's income they have built a brick house, bought 75 decimals of land and set up a husking mill beside the house.
