About
Ganesh Chandra Das, from Puthia upazila in Rajshahi, has been playing and selling flutes on the Rajshahi University campus for about 36 years, and this income keeps his household. He makes the flutes by hand, bringing the main raw material, bamboo, from Dhaka. His flutes cost Tk 100 to 300. He usually sits on a culvert on the road north-west of the university's central library, sometimes under a lamppost on Paris Road, and besides the campus he travels to sell in Rajshahi city, Bagha, Natore, Bogura Sadar and Santahar. He got his love of music from his father, a farmer who sang, and has played the flute since childhood. He used to sell Tk 1,000–2,000 worth of flutes a day at Boishakhi fairs, admission tests, Victory Day and Independence Day; he says sales have now fallen a great deal.
