About
Howlader Mohammad Ali, a village doctor in the Utkul area of Bagerhat Sadar, makes coffee from date seeds. The idea came to him after watching a YouTube video about date-seed coffee in Saudi Arabia, and he started production with an investment of about Tk 25,000. He buys date bunches at Tk 20 each to collect the seeds. The seeds are soaked and cleaned, peeled and sun-dried, then roasted with sand in a wok and ground in a machine or blender; no chemicals are used. So far he has sold about Tk 20,000 worth of the product, and many people come to buy it every day. During the date season five workers, paid Tk 500 each a day, help him collect, clean, dry and roast the seeds. He plans to sell online and reach buyers at home and abroad; the district Department of Agricultural Extension has said it will give him technical and financial support.
