About
Hridoy Mia, a young agri-entrepreneur from Chenganiya village in Sapdhari union of Islampur upazila, Jamalpur, grows capsicum on a remote char of the Jamuna river. Inspired by YouTube videos, he began on 40 decimals of char land with improved seed brought from Bogura, spending Tk 70,000. According to the upazila agriculture officer, he is the first to grow capsicum commercially in the upazila, and the agriculture office advises him. A few workers help in the garden and Hridoy tends the plants himself; hundreds of plants bear red, yellow and green capsicum, each weighing about 250 grams when mature. As capsicum does not sell locally, he takes it to Karwan Bazar in Dhaka, selling it at Tk 4,000 to 8,000 a maund. By the time of the report he had sold Tk 1.3 lakh worth, with at least Tk 1.5 lakh more still in the field. Many people come to see the garden.
