About
Jahanara Khatun, a homemaker in Bittipara village of Kushtia Sadar upazila, was the first in her village to make organic vermicompost. In 2021 she set up two cement rings in her yard with cow dung and earthworms, after training and technical help from the Sadar upazila agriculture office. She now has 40 rings in a tin shed behind the house and 10 more in front, each yielding 30 kg of compost. Besides dung from her own cows she collects dung from many households in the village and mixes in vegetable waste and banana bark; after 20–25 days under cover the compost is sieved and packed in small packets or sacks. She produces about 40 maunds a month, worth about Tk 24,000, uses two to three maunds herself and sells the rest. Farmers from different areas phone her and come to her house to buy. With this income she has replaced her shack with a brick house and keeps cattle and goats; following her example, more than a hundred women in the village now make vermicompost.
