About
Jahangir Alam (35) of Montola village, Mymensingh Sadar, drives a rickshaw in Mymensingh city every other day and, on the days he is home, makes crafts from bamboo and coconut shells. Begun as a hobby, the work now sells; he learned techniques from the internet. He treats the shells and bamboo against woodworm, then varnishes the finished pieces. He makes 25–30 kinds of products: pen stands, brush holders, flower pots, wall hangings, wall clocks, cups, lamps, spoons, and flowers and trees from coconut husk. His wife Jannat Akter sells them from a table at the trade fair at Kachharighat in the city. Because local prices are low he is thinking of selling online, and hopes to export and build a workshop.
