About
Jasma Akter (35), a homemaker of Nabuochhimuddin Para in West Ujanchar, Goalanda Upazila, Rajbari, was inspired in 2023 by her friend Tania's vermicompost stall at a livestock department fair in Faridpur. She bought three kg of worms from her friend at Tk 1,200 a kg, brought home two cows and started small in February 2023, carrying on despite taunts from family and neighbours. She got training and five kg of free worms from the Department of Agricultural Extension, and later the upazila agriculture office gave her a compost machine and rings. Output grew from 15-20 kg a month to 40-50 maunds a month in two tin sheds, sold at Tk 15-20 a kg; the compost goes beyond Goalanda to Rajbari, Faridpur and even Dhaka, and she meets much of the agriculture office's own demand. Two men and two women work regularly, and dung is bought from farms at Tk 20-25 a sack. With about Tk 5 lakh invested she makes Tk 20,000-25,000 profit a month; her husband Mahbubul Azam helps. She plans to make biogas in future.
