Jesmin Akter's Peanut and Vegetable Farm

Jesmin Akter, daughter of Osman Goni of East Chalbala Satirpar in Chalbala union, Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat, has grown peanuts, maize, rice and companion crops on high land beside her home for five years. Her husband works abroad, and her farm income pays for her two children's schooling. In the 2024 season she spent Tk 15,000, including seed, on peanuts on 30 decimals; the previous year she sold peanuts at Tk 12,000-13,000 per maund. After the peanut harvest she plants maize in the same field. This year she has also grown cauliflower, onion, garlic, sesame and other vegetables. She hires workers and works in the fields herself, and also keeps ducks, chickens and goats. Many women in the area are taking up farming after seeing her.
