About
Kalam Packaging is Abul Kalam Azad's small factory in the BSCIC small and cottage industrial estate at Jhumjhumpur, Jashore, which turns pulp from discarded cardboard cartons into paper cones (locally called bobbins) for winding jute yarn; it is the only maker of such cones in the Khulna-Jashore region. Abul Kalam, from Naliya village beside the town, started sewing sacks in Bostapotti at just ten, and later became a trader in scrap paper and cartons. Since 2008-09 he has made heavy cardboard cartons and packaging sheets on a BSCIC plot, which he later bought; in mid-2021 he took a loan from Agrani Bank and began making cones. The three-storey factory uses two tonnes of waste cartons a day, makes 15,000 to 20,000 cones a week and employs about 50 workers. The cones are sold to Super Jute Mill in Fultola and Akij Jute Mill in Abhaynagar, travelling abroad with their jute yarn. Old cartons are bought from collectors at Tk 10 a kg.
