Kumar Bairagi (45) of Kachua village in Abhaynagar upazila, Jashore, once caught mud eels (kuchia) himself and sold them at local markets. Seven years ago he started a kuchia trading business with Tk 10,000. With his elder son he travels through at least 30 nearby villages collecting live eels, keeps them in a holding tank at home, and later sends them to a wholesale depot in Rupsha, Khulna, and to crab-and-eel depots in Dhaka, from where they are exported to China and Taiwan. On request he also cuts and prepares the eels ready for cooking. In the last financial year he sold 10,000 kg wholesale in 100 consignments, making more than Tk 3 lakh profit after costs; he has made a profit every year for five years. An NGO built the holding tank in his yard and gave him processing tools and training. With his profits he has bought land and is building a semi-pucca house.
