About
Parvez Kamal Pavel (44), eldest son of the late Monir Uddin of Harati union, Lalmonirhat Sadar, runs a fish farm. In 2005 he leased a pond for Tk 20,000 and began fish farming; later he took land from his father and built a second farm in his area. Today a farm and a pond on 3 acres 75 decimals hold local small fish along with rui, catla, mrigel, silver carp, sarpunti, tilapia, kalibaus, lalotia, bata and others. He buys fingerlings, grows them out and sells them; fish traders come to the pond bank and carry the fish in pots on their bicycles to markets around the district, some of them having bought from him for 7–8 years. His younger brother Bayezid Islam helps full time; the two brothers and five male workers run the farm. After all costs he earns more than Tk 4–5 lakh a year. New entrepreneurs often visit for his advice, and with government support he plans to dig more ponds on unused land nearby.
