About
A tea garden on the hillocks and slopes of the Lalmai hills at Boro Dharmapur in Barpara union of Cumilla Sadar South upazila, owned by Md. Tarikul Islam Majumdar. In 2021, on the advice of a friend who owns a tea estate in Kamalganj, Moulvibazar, he brought 6,000 BT-2 saplings from Moulvibazar at Tk 45 each and planted them on one acre. Because rainfall is low, a tube well was installed to water the garden. Leaves have been plucked every 15 days since September 2022: 500 kg in the first round and about 6,500 kg so far, which are to be processed into green tea. Supervisor Raju Tanti, who came from Bilashchhara tea estate in Sreemangal, and his wife Dipali Tanti look after the garden with seven more workers. In March 2023 another 5,000 saplings were planted; there are plans to expand to five acres and to bring a tea-processing machine from Japan. Tourists and visitors come to see the garden every day. In the same area Tarikul is also growing cashew nuts with support from the agriculture department.
