About
Masuma Islam of Koigari in Bogura town was inspired by the women entrepreneurs' Facebook group 'WE' in 2020, after her husband Rajibul Islam lost his hotel job during Covid. With Tk 300 from her daughter's clay piggy bank she made potato chips and began selling online, later adding chanachur and sarees. She had learned pickle-making from her mother and mother-in-law; at first she made mango, olive, jujube, amla, garlic and chilli pickles, later adding ghee, doi, lachha semai and mustard oil. Her big success came with beef pickle, made from a YouTube recipe. She now sells about 100 kg of beef pickle a month at Tk 1,000 a kg, plus about 50 kg of garlic pickle and 100 kg of ghee. Orders come from Bogura, Rajshahi, Khulna and elsewhere in the country, and she has sent pickle to the USA, London, Dubai, Malaysia, China, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. Most sales are through the Women and e-Commerce Forum and other online groups. Fifteen employees work with her; she earns Tk 3–4 lakh a month and her capital has grown to Tk 20 lakh. She hopes to build a full brand of consumer goods.
