About
Md. Ayub Ali Sheikh (55) of Chargobra village in Gobra union, Gopalganj Sadar, spent 2003-2007 in Singapore and has farmed with modern methods since returning in 2008. On 40 decimals beside his house he grows three crops a year, sammam (muskmelon), brinjal and cucumber, spending Tk 1.5 lakh and selling at least Tk 7.5 lakh worth a year. He also grows vegetables year-round on another two bighas. In June 2023 he planted 2,000 Rock Star and Aroma Sweet and 500 Golden Honeydew sammam seedlings using plastic mulch; he began harvesting at 60 days and sold the 2-4.25 kg melons at Tk 100-120 a kg, against a cost of Tk 55,000. Using vermicompost and yellow pheromone traps, he needs little pesticide. Visitors come to see the field every day, and neighbouring growers follow his methods.
