In the Karkhana Parer Bazar area of Bauphal upazila, Patuakhali, local young man Milon Hawlader has built 'Milon Mushroom Palli'. He began growing mushrooms on a small scale as a hobby a few years ago; it gradually became a commercial success and he named the farm after himself. Several kinds of mushroom are harvested here every day and supplied to local markets as well as to the district town and the wholesale markets of the capital. A few local women and men work on the farm tending, harvesting, drying and packing the mushrooms. Seeing its success, many young people from the area visit the farm and learn growing techniques there, planning farms of their own. The owner says government training, low-interest loans and marketing support would help the sector grow further.
