Mokarram Hossain (30), a grower from the Robipur area of Birol upazila, Dinajpur, grows roses on 42 decimals of his own land; his garden has flowers all twelve months. Wholesalers collect the flowers from the garden, and he earns Tk 5,000-6,000 a day from rose sales. He keeps four people on permanently to tend and guard the garden, with a fixed daily cost for wages, sprays and care. Flower prices fluctuate and are higher on special days; roses in this part of Birol usually sell for Tk 3-4 each, but went for Tk 10-12 each on Valentine's Day.
