Potter Moni Rani Pal (46) of Palpara in Nijmehar village, Shahrasti upazila, Chandpur, has kept up the pottery trade for about three decades. Once some 300 families here made and sold clay pitchers, pots, lamps and toys; now 15–20 families remain. Moni Rani still shapes clay goods by hand, fires them and prepares them for sale. Scarce and costlier clay and a lack of money make it hard for her to meet market demand.
