About
Monowara Begum (45) of Garadaha Dakkhinpara village, Garadaha union, Shahjadpur upazila, Sirajganj, became self-reliant by making lentil bori (sun-dried lentil dumplings). She learned the craft from women in Shalgaria, Pabna, while visiting her elder brother; in 2001 she made her first batch from 15 kg of anchor lentils for a Tk 300 profit, then took a Tk 10,000 loan to start the business. Within a year and a half it took off; with the profits she bought cows and goats, built houses and bought a lentil-grinding machine. Now 12 women, including family members, help her. 10 kg of lentils makes 9 kg of bori; black gram (mashkalai) bori costs Tk 160-200 a kg to make and sells for Tk 300-350, while anchor lentil bori sells for Tk 120 a kg. She goes around the village teaching poor women to make bori so they can earn for themselves.
