About
Nazmul Islam worked in Dhaka as a private car driver and returned to his village after losing his job during Covid. After seeing farmer Rashedul Islam's integrated guava orchard in Gabha village of neighbouring Banaripara, and with help from the Barishal Regional Agricultural Research Institute and the Regional Horticulture Research Centre, he planted 150 grafted BARI Guava-2 trees on 40 decimals of saline land using the sorjan method in February 2024. He raises fish in the channels and grows climbing vegetables, papaya and small watermelons on trellises over them, and later expanded farming to another 160 decimals. In the first year guava sales earned about Tk 40,000; now guava alone brings about Tk 1.5 lakh a year, and with fish, vegetables and other crops his yearly income is about Tk 6 lakh. He has started farming local tilapia on 90 more decimals, set up a separate orchard of 200 papaya trees on about 70 decimals, and begun a goat farm at home. Three workers work there regularly, with seven more in season. Local farmers come for advice almost every day, and he is raising guava saplings for three farmers preparing to build farms the same way.
