About
New China Footwear is one of the shoe factories in the Brahmanbaria town outskirts and Sadar upazila, owned by Farooq Osman. Work includes stitching, gluing, cutting soles, colouring and fixing blocks. He says the factory's shoes sell wholesale at Tk 260–350 and travel all over the country because they never compromise on quality. Last year there was a chemicals shortage, but not this time; with many PO factories in the district, business is fair but below expectations. With government support he would like to make better shoes for export. Brahmanbaria has 38 machine-made (PO) footwear factories and 20–25 handmade-shoe workshops; traders from Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barishal and Khulna divisions come and take shoes away by covered van.
