About
Peter Sangma grows pineapples commercially in North Bakakura, a Garo-hills border village in Jhenaigati, Sherpur. Coming from Madhupur, in early 2022 he planted about 125,000 Madhupur-variety plants on his father-in-law's six acres of hill land; within a year and a half 110,000 plants fruited. Upkeep, irrigation, fertiliser and care cost about Tk 11 lakh, and he sold the garden's roughly 125,000 pineapples to a Madhupur wholesaler for Tk 16 lakh. Wild elephants damaged part of the crop, trimming the profit. He says the fruit is juicier than Madhupur's; people come from far away to see the garden, and local workers earn a living tending it.
