About
S M Shafiqul Islam, an assistant professor at Boali Degree College in Sakhipur Upazila, Tangail, farms alongside teaching. Inspired by YouTube, in December 2022 he bought about 7,200 saplings from Chapainawabganj and began growing the Philippine 'black sugarcane' variety on 87 decimals of his own land in Boali Madhyapara; buying and planting cost about Tk 3 lakh, and another Tk 1.5 lakh the next year. The canes are long, thick and soft, with almost twice the juice of ordinary cane, and have to be tied up with bamboo and rope. Each cane sells for Tk 80-100, and he hopes to sell Tk 7-8 lakh worth. People from different districts and his own area order saplings from him, and villagers crowd in to see the garden. He urges jobless young people to take up this cane.
