About
Siddique Hossain of Tikuria Chala village in Sakhipur Upazila, Tangail, lost Tk 5 lakh to a broker around 2003 while trying to go abroad, then took a Tk 50,000 loan from BRAC and set up Bikalpa Nursery; as its owner he won the Prime Minister's award in 2009. Involved in nurseries and fruit growing for over a decade, he grafted 4,000 trees from one early-ripening jujube tree at his home. His four orchards cover 27 acres in his and four nearby villages, leased at Tk 40,000 an acre a year; the jujube ripens in Agrahayan, two months before the normal Falgun season, so he sells it at Tk 120-160 a kg. In the 2022 season he sold Tk 50 lakh worth in a month. Orange, malta, guava, sapodilla, pomelo, pomegranate, wood apple and rambutan trees grow between the jujubes. Twenty women and ten men work all year, and his own pickup takes the fruit to Karwan Bazar, Jatrabari, Shyambazar and Gazipur. Villagers call him 'Boroi Siddique'; more than a hundred people in Sakhipur have taken up jujube after him.
