About
Robin Pal, a potter of Boalia Palpara in Paikgasa upazila, Khulna, has worked with clay for 30 years to keep up his forefathers' trade. A few families in the potters' quarter still work from dawn till midnight making and painting cooking pots, mosquito-coil stands, clay plates, pitchers, flower pots and children's toys such as dolls, elephants, horses, peacocks, birds and boats, which sell at the Chaitra Sankranti and Pahela Baishakh fairs. As plastic has cut demand for clay goods, Robin Pal now also makes sanitary latrine rings and well rings. He says no one else in his family wants to take up the trade.
