About
Roknuzzaman of Hospitalpara in Kutubpur union, Meherpur Sadar upazila, used to make a living from farming. In 2004 he saw beekeeping on a visit to Magura, went back several times to learn the techniques, and then started keeping bees in his own village with four bee boxes bought for Tk 10,000. The farm now has more than 200 bee boxes, kept in his courtyard and in four orchards in the area. Honey is extracted by machine from the combs in the wooden boxes every seven or eight days, and the farm produces three maunds of honey a week. Because the honey is pure, many people come from town to buy it at wholesale prices; in early 2022 it was selling at Tk 500 a kg and his honey sales brought in more than Tk 2 lakh a month. Two full-time workers help him, one of them Jahidul Hossain on a monthly salary. Seeing his success, the district Department of Agricultural Extension began training unemployed young people in beekeeping, where he attends and gives advice.
