About
Rokonuzzaman Rasel, a Bangla lecturer at RIM Degree College in Kazipur, Sirajganj, already ran a nursery. The year before, he brought plants from Chapai Nawabganj and grew strawberries on a trial basis, earning Tk 2 to 2.5 lakh after costs. Encouraged, this year he planted a total of 15,000 plants commercially in two plots on three bigha at Dublai, beside the Sirajganj–Meghai road. The varieties are RABI-3 (brought from a Rajshahi lab last year; this time he raised the plants himself), the American Festival, Thai and Winter Dawn. The crop is grown on mulch, with a submersible pump for irrigation and CCTV cameras against theft; costs come to about Tk 2 lakh a bigha. At the plot west of the college the upazila agriculture office has built him a poly-net house, where he raises plants himself. He tends the field after college hours and has taken on two or three workers.
