About
Rumpa Makhal of Mariapalli (the Christian quarter) on the edge of Bagerhat town began making handicrafts from dried kash grass (thatch) and date-palm leaves in 2019. Originally from Digholia in Khulna, Rumpa could not find a job after passing HSC, so she turned the handwork she had learned at school into a living; she brought in orders from a Khulna handicraft marketing firm and taught women around her. Her group now has 45 local women who work in their own homes making trays and baskets, fruit baskets, floor mats, table mats and other eco-friendly home decor; Rumpa brings in the orders and everyone makes and delivers the pieces together. They gather the raw materials locally and do the sun-drying, soaking and dyeing themselves; each piece takes 200 grams to 2 kg of grass and leaves, depending on size. Prices range from Tk 50 to Tk 2,000 by product and quality. Up to September 2023 the group had earned more than Tk 30 lakh; the previous year's sales topped Tk 25 lakh.
