Mamunur Rashid of Nijdarpa village in Tepamadhupur union, Kaunia upazila of Rangpur, began making vermicompost in 2011 after Department of Agricultural Extension training, bringing 400 Lumbricus rubellus earthworms from Thailand through an agriculture officer. In 2013, when rice ears in the area turned white and spoiled, his two acres treated with his compost were unaffected; since then farmers have called it 'magic' fertiliser. In 2014 he went from 6 to 40 cement rings and 20 sheds; he now makes 5-6 tonnes a month, sold at Tk 15 per kg, about Tk 1 lakh a month in sales, with Tk 50,000 a month spent on two workers and cow dung. Since 2015 he has also made tricho-compost and tricho-leachate (Tk 600 a litre, 10 litres a month); in 2023 a lab test found 15 nutrients at standard levels. He sells 10 kg of earthworms a month, Tk 6-7 lakh worth so far, and at least 10 farmers make compost with his worms. After training in Savar he grows mushrooms from 500 spawn packets, and pesticide-free vegetables and ginger in his yard. The business is named after his son, Muntasir Billah Sabid.
