Mehedi Hasan's Mushroom Farm

Mehedi Hasan, who holds a diploma in mechanical engineering from Rangpur Polytechnic, once ran his own videography studio; he sold all his equipment to pay for his mother's cancer treatment. In October 2022 he started growing mushrooms in a single drum with Tk 200 worth of spawn; his first 100 cylinders all spoiled. He then contacted the Burirhat Horticulture Centre and took a 10-day entrepreneur course at the Mushroom Development Institute in Savar. The farm is at his in-laws' home in the Amashu Kukrul area of Rangpur city; with Tk 3 lakh from a government project he built a growing house and a spawn production lab. Besides fresh mushrooms he makes soup mix, dried mushrooms, powder, pickle, chops and chips, and his stall at fairs has drawn attention. His monthly profit is Tk 60,000-70,000. At least 35 local women grow mushrooms with spawn he supplies and methods he taught them, and sell their harvest to him. He hopes to grow mushroom farming to an industrial scale under his own brand.
