Sadeka Banu's Fish Fry Farm

Sadeka Banu (42), a homemaker from Maligram in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, began in July 2015 with the help of her husband Belal Hossain, leasing two ponds in her village to raise fry of rohu, catla, mrigal, silver carp, sarputi and tilapia; she succeeded in the first year and took three more ponds the next. She now produces fry and farms fish in 22 ponds on 31 acres in Maligram, Borogram and Komolpur. Since 2023 she has produced fry of WorldFish's 'third-generation' G-3 rohu in three ponds; it grows about 30 percent faster than ordinary rohu and is in high demand. Fry traders collect fry in pots from her ponds and sell them in villages and markets, and her fry now goes beyond the district to the whole country. About 20 men and women work for her, and her yearly income is Tk 7-8 lakh. Her husband left his own work to look after the ponds. She is a member of the Shyamoli Mohila Samiti, and MBSK and the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation have supported her from the start.
