About
Sahakul Islam (34) of Gopalpur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila lost both arms to an electric shock while playing in a field at the age of 10. Many advised him to beg, but he refused; he bought five goats with his father and began rearing them. He takes the herd to the fields every day; as the goats kidded he worked to grow their number, then began selling. Within a few years the farm was on its feet, and in 2022 it had 40 goats. His wife Tarifa Khatun helps him in many ways; the family lives on the farm's income, and his aim is to give his two daughters a higher education. The Department of Social Services has said it will help him expand the farm with an interest-free microloan.
