About
A commercial bird farm run by the couple Salma Sultana and Loman Reza in Sultan Nagar village, Melandah upazila, Jamalpur; in the village everyone knows them as the 'bird farm', and many call Salma 'the bird mother'. Frustrated by unemployment, Loman went abroad in 2012; he came back four years later and, as a hobby, began keeping a pair of birds, from which the farm grew. They learned bird keeping from YouTube. The farm now has about 700 birds of 25 species, including lovebirds, budgerigars, parakeets, giribaj pigeons, cockatiels, nightingales, zebra finches and pigeons; earlier it had about 3,000 birds of 40 species. The farm is on the second floor of their house. The birds eat about 40 kg of feed a day, costing Tk 3,500. Net monthly income after costs is about Tk 1–2 lakh. Birds are sold online and from the farm, to buyers all over the country. They recovered from a theft and from losing about 300 birds in the winter of 2018, and the two of them still do all the farm work themselves.
