About
Sanju's Horse Farm was set up by Shariful Islam, known to everyone as Sanju. Fond of horse racing since childhood, he started in 2006, after entering higher secondary, with a local horse named 'Duldul' bought with his mother's savings, and went on to win prizes at races. After a BBA from a private university in Dhaka he returned to his village, took a job as a Community Health Care Provider (CHCP) and in 2014 started a horse farm at his own home. Begun with foals brought from Rajasthan, Bihar and Punjab in India, the hobby farm became a commercial one three years before the report. It now has 24 horses of Marwari, Sindhi, Nukra and other breeds, the most striking being 'Nukra', a pure white Arabian-type horse. Two workers look after the horses. Buyers are mostly people who take part in horse races, along with well-off hobbyists; he has also sold horses to Bangladesh Police and the Bangladesh Ansar Academy. He rents out horses for weddings and other social events, and people come from far away to see the farm. He is trying to breed horses to cut the country's dependence on imports.
