About
Shafiqul Islam of Chanpara village, Bagmara upazila, Rajshahi, has kept bees since 2002, starting with a few boxes bought in Santhia, Pabna, with money from his father. In 2022 he had 100 hive boxes of Apis mellifera bees. In the mustard, black cumin, coriander and lychee flowering seasons he takes the boxes by pickup to Naogaon, Rajshahi, Natore and Satkhira. In season he harvests two or three times a month, getting about 10 maunds each time from the 100 boxes, and earns Tk 5-7 lakh a year. He sells honey to companies and, after training and getting permission, has begun marketing honey himself. Five employees work for him. Once landless, he has bought land and built a brick house, and is an inspiration to unemployed young people in the area.
