About
Shah Alam (45), of Niamatpur village in Shialkol union, Sirajganj Sadar upazila, came home after about twelve years in Saudi Arabia and began growing chuijhal (Piper chaba) in 2022. While still abroad he was inspired by YouTube videos of successful chuijhal growers in Khulna and took advice from the owner of a chuijhal seedling nursery there. On 30 August 2022 he leased 33 decimals of land next to his home for three years for Tk 60,000 and started the crop with support from the local organisation NDP under a PKSF spice-crop demonstration. He says he has spent Tk 1.17 lakh since starting and this year sold Tk 7.37 lakh worth of chuijhal in two rounds; wholesale buyers from Khulna and elsewhere come to the field to buy. The district agriculture office says this is the first successful commercial chuijhal crop in the district. Because of demand he plans to plant two more bigha of chuijhal, and he has started improved-variety papaya on three bigha, which has begun to fruit. Young people in the village are now keen to follow him.
