About
Md. Shah-Alam, a vegetable grower in Betagi Sankipur union of Dashmina upazila, Patuakhali, grows various vegetables in the winter season. On a business trip to Bandarban he saw Rakhail brinjal and decided to grow it. His first crop on half an acre gave a good yield and found strong demand; the next year he brought 2,000 Rakhail (BARI-12) brinjal seedlings from the Dumki agricultural institute and planted them on about one acre. He does not need to take his brinjal to market: wholesalers come and collect it from the field. According to the upazila agriculture officer, he was the first in the upazila to grow this brinjal; more than 150 farmers have become interested after seeing his success, and he has been nominated for an award as a successful vegetable grower.
