About
Shahin Mallik of Jhaubaria village in Meherpur Sadar upazila is the district's largest fish farmer, raising native fish such as magur, shing, tengra, pabda and puti in six ponds on 24 bighas. He first farmed catfish in 2011; with sales of about Tk 1 crore a year he has averaged a profit of Tk 20 lakh a year, though rising feed prices have cut into it. These fish give one crop a year. He plans to expand and to build his own hatchery to produce fry, lowering his costs and helping other farmers. Seeing his success, many young people in the district are taking up commercial native-fish farming.
