About
Shaktipada Roy and his wife Mallika Rani have an acre of land around their home on the bank of the Kajla river at Bamonhat in Narail Sadar upazila, planted with mango, lychee, hog plum and other fruit trees, and they grow crops between the trees all year round. After learning about growing ginger in sacks from Shaktipada's elder brother Muktodesh Roy, and on his advice, the couple planted ginger in 10,000 sacks for the first time — in rows between the big trees and on open ground, with dhaincha planted for shade. Each sack cost Tk 50–60, about Tk 5–6 lakh in all; they expect about one and a half kg of ginger per plant and hope for Tk 15 lakh profit in 10 months. The agriculture department is supporting them. If it pays, they plan to plant 12,000 to 15,000 sacks next time. People come from far away to see their 'sack garden'.
