About
Shuvo Silk is a silk-fabric business in Harinagar, the traditional weavers' quarter of Chapai Nawabganj. Its owner, 43-year-old Shuvomoy Das, teaches at a private college but keeps up his ancestors' weaving trade. The silk fabric woven in Harinagar is sold almost entirely to Aarong (BRAC), at prices and designs that Aarong sets. Weavers said in 2024 that 1,500–2,000 looms ran in Harinagar 10–15 years ago and about 500 now, and that silk yarn has risen to Tk 9,000–9,500 a kg while cloth prices have not risen. Shuvomoy Das expressed his worry about the future of the silk trade.
