About
Md. Al Amin makes kumra bori (sun-dried dumplings of rice, ash gourd and black gram) as a family business in Naogaon village, Naogaon union, Tarash upazila, Sirajganj. Some 15–20 families in the village make bori, and winter is the main season. In the cool of the morning women workers mix rice, gourd and black gram into a paste and drop the bori onto thin cloth stretched over bamboo-stick nets, then dry them in the sun. Working one and a half to two hours a day, the women earn up to Tk 150–200. Al Amin says modern equipment has made the work somewhat easier and that with government support he could produce on a bigger scale. Bori from the village meets local demand and is also sent to other parts of the country and to relatives abroad; traders often sell to wholesalers at much lower prices.
